Sunday Afternoon Grab Bag

Ahoy Ship Mateys!

Well, another successful cruise today! We had lots of people in the chat and lots of great feedback :) I really appreciate all of you more than  any words I could type here could express. Scott Erickson, you've got yourself quite a fanbase on my show man! Congrats...in fact all of my OGR Artists do and I'm pleased as punch. I'd like to thank Rick Wrigley for allowing me to bring all this fun and music to you...this is all I want to do in life, so to have such a big wonderful community full of love is amazing, you all rock so much! Along those lines, I'm toying around with taking another show slot. I can't decide on when though. I've come to realize that I can't keep walking on Cassie's timeslot so I need to do something to facilitate everyone's requests...including my own. I don't want to let anyone down, so you know I do everything I can for all of you. So I'll keep you updated on that, I promise!

Here's what we heard today!

Jammin' At Full Sail

Ahoy Ship Mateys!

HOLY CHEESE!!! We had the greatest day today! I want to thank each and everyone of you who came aboard with me for doing so. I say this a lot, and I don't mind saying it again...I can't do this without you all. I love what I do, but more importantly, I love sharing it with you lovely people. It's just a whole lot of fun :) So thank you for tuning in each week from the bottom of my heart. ^_^

Alright, so...let's see we've lost a few people this week, Greg Ham of Men At Work...Levon Helm of The Band, and "America's Oldest Teenager" Dick Clark. BUT they will never be forgotten, and we had a gain this week...a BIG Coastline Cruise congratulations to ROBIN GIBB of The Bee Gees...reports of him waking up from the coma have been circling the globe, and this Captain wishes nothing but good things and great health to the Gibb Family.

We ushered in some new fantastic artists this week: We saw more from Johnny J. Blair "Singer at Large", his album "I Like The Street" is absolutely amazing and I feel such a great happiness being able to share his music with you all (big thanks to you Johnny J. for sending me this art in the first place :) ).

We also heard from Christian Nesmith who describes his music as having a "High HBF" or High Headbang Factor...I felt it. ^_^ I also stand by my comment about him. "Bono eat your heart out..." I make no apologies for this, thank you very much. I really enjoy "Axe To Grind" and it's my hope that you enjoyed it too. I hope to bring you even more of his music within the coming episodes.

Scott Erickson wowed us again today. I almost thought I wasn't going to get to play what I think to be the best cover of "Cuddly Toy" I've ever heard. I've heard a lot of music in my time...but this rocks! We haven't heard the last from him ^_^

Circe Link gave "I Will Survive" a run for its' money with her ultra groovy tune of standing on your own two feet..."Paint the Town Red" from her Live From Japan album. I've grown to love this "eggscentric" lady. ^_^

Annd last but certainly not least, that groovy duo of Annabel Jones & Charlie Westropp totally knocked us out with "Normal Heights" a sparkly oceanic tune of self-reflection and I believe, remembrance. Of course folks, I'm talking about Britain's newest force of light, BLUEBELL. If you dug what I've been playing by them, stand by...because come June 11th, 2012 I'll be bringing you a brand spankin' new "chune" and a double single, Normal Heights/Cinderella. Annabel's been hard at work on a video for "Cinderella", and I for one can't wait to see it. ^_^

Now that we've recapped the day's artistry, let's roll out the entire playlist. This is what you heard on The Coastline Cruise for April 22, 2012

The First Annual Birthday Bash!

Ahoy Ship Mateys!

Well, let's see here...once again I am super late with these postings. Sorry! Anywhoo, I'd like to thank all of my vibrant, happy Ship Mates for joining me yesterday, and to those who continue to join me through the uploads and whatnot, big ups to you cool cats! We had a lot of great music didn't we? Speaking of, I guess the cat's out of the bag now...that elusive "friend" of mine called Scott Hammet is more than just a friend...He shares half of his DNA with me...Yes folks he's none other than my dad! I only carried on for as long as I did at his request, I'm really quite proud to be related to him. ^_^ To those of you who sent so many caring and kind messages about his music, many thanks...he was absolutely floored. I hope to bring you more original stuff in the future.

Then there were my headliners: Scott Erickson, Circe Link, Bluebell, The Who, The Monkees, Joni Mitchell, Lady and The Lost Boys and more! Weren't they incredible! I'll be posting info about them in just a second.
Let me just say, that both Scott and I are extremely pleased with the warm reception he was given, and I'm hoping to help his star rise to that end.

Circe Link, "The Angel of Los Angeles"! She is fantastic. She has fast become my sister in music and I thank her for all the wonderful music she's making and for all her kindness to her fair captain, yours truly. And of course, I can't mention her without thanking Crew Member Christy Jeffcoat, who sent her my way in the first place!

Bluebell is a staple with the song "Normal Heights". Here's why: As a DJ with WUSC, I learned how to have an appreciation for new music. This one hits me like the waves Annabel sings about. Her haunting vocals tend to make me feel as if I'm floating weightless in the ocean. It was written about a place in California called Normal Heights, where she was vacationing. In fact, here's what she said in an interview that was brought to my attention: ‘Normal Heights’ is about a guy I know from California. The song is about his life and a time when it crossed paths with mine. I made the video myself with footage and photographs from his website, he does this candid camera stuff that is, in my opinion, brilliant...."
So there you have it folks, the reason why I play this tune and will until I see more from her...and that just adds to my fun ^_^

Lady & The Lost Boys was Annabel's other musical venture, and I chose to play them because to me they have this really rich, colorful sound that I find absolutely beautiful.

Alright, so now let's get down to brass tacks! Here's the playlist in all it's glory! Grab it and Grow!

Featured Artist: Lady & The Lost Boys Bio

A nice man once said..... Playing music from the Berkshire school of damp labradors, green wellies, moist Edinburgh woollens and ‘Mummy Knows Best ’ attitudes, Lady and the Lost Boys are a female lead five-piece... The introspective topics of the songs are based upon personal experiences and transparent memories... Sipping a coffee in the breaks, petite dark haired vocalist Annabel Jones sings the Legoland, Camberwick Green, Technicolor songs from the Lady and the Lost Boys song-book. A few pared down guitar riffs are well hidden and tend to illuminate rather than detract from the amorphous sounds. The experience is fascinating and calming... This is a band for a damp autumn evening by the open-fire, or to listen to on your Ipod as you take your golden retriever for a walk down the leaf-fall winter lanes. .. .. .. Another nice man once said.... The impression I got was that they make music for themselves. This approach to music is often frowned upon due to it being hard to market but screw that when it sounds this good. Lead singer Annabel Jones has the most heartbreakingly beautiful voice I've heard for quite some time and she happens to be backed by one hell of a tight band. ...... Then another nice man once said... .. In MySpace's desperate attempt to pigeon-hole musicians into categories the description of them is often melted down, squished up and mashed into the simplest form of wrong - three words Just/Like/This. In a rare moment of hitting the nail smack on the head, Lady and the Lost Boys have described themselves to be Childrens/Shoegaze/Idol. Annabel has the sparkly ability to sing wizened thoughts as though she's still learning them. There's been a steady rise of young, female talent coming out of the capital recently. Many of them turn their backs on the goals they set out to achieve in favour of the "Exploit Me" banner - it's about time someone followed through with their plans, and I've got a feeling Lady might be those pioneers of sorts..... Thank you nice men. ........ .. .. .. .. .. .. ..

It's also worth saying that they began in 2005 and they didn't break up in 2006 I keep getting my years mixed up. They didn't disband until about two years ago. Sorry folks! I hope you still love me!
PS [[Lady and the Lost Boys, I miss you because I never got to see you live. <3]]

Yesterday's Underground

Ahoy Ship Mateys!

Captain Holly speaking!...but then, of course you knew that. WOWEE! I can't believe how many of you there were in the chat room! I think we were ten high in there! I can't thank you enough for spending some time with me, since it was Easter and all. I can't be selfish, must remember the REAL reason for the day :) Anywho, you're probably wondering why I chose so early to write this. Well, I suppose technically speaking it's still Sunday night for most of you...I'm just extremely prone to insomnia and would *like* to envision the inside of my eyelids...but it hasn't happened yet. Good thing too, I sort of like being reasonably punctual with these updates. So, I'm watching my Podomatic and so far, at last count (which was like, a few mins ago) I was up to 82 plays and showing hits from the US, UK, Japan, Canada and Germany! Way to go you guys! Well, I did say I wanted world domination! Haha. I truly can't do what I do without all of you lovely people so thank you from the bottom of my heart. It's so lovely to know that people out there care about what I say, and what I play. Today we heard from newcomers to the Our Generation Radio family: Circe Link and Lady and The Lost Boys HOORAY!!!!!! You might have noticed that I kept referring to Annabel as Lady Annabel. Well, I can't help it folks, that's what she was called haha. Weren't they all amazing? Let's give them a round of applause! I'll be keeping them up on my "rotation" of sorts. You'll see them again, don't worry! <3 I like bringing you fresh new sounds, as well as the classics. I hope you like that about me too. :)

It has come to my attention that there was indeed a case of misheard lyrics. This one comes from a "pretty little ditty" as the singer calls them, "Someday Man" by Davy Jones. It would appear that the words are not "baby child" as I previously thought, but are actually...
"I was born, a someday man,
of a maybe child..."

So, this indeed was not a shout out to the southern states as "baby child" was not correct. In further examination, that doesn't even make sense. *facepalm* alright well, you know what that means...it's time to see what we heard today!

So Johnny, tell em' what they've won...

Operation Turtle Day...the late edition

Ahoy Ship Mateys!

Well, I've gotten numerous positive responses toward the interview I did with Howard Kaylan of the Fabulous Flo & Eddie and The Turtles! (There wasn't anything outstanding that started with T, that's not to say they aren't awesome cause they totally are...) I'm sorry I've been asleep at the wheel and getting to you on TUESDAY. Ugh, feel free to shame me...I shame me. I had a wonderful time doing that interview, and again I want to thank Howard for agreeing to talk to me. Excellent idea, buddy :) I'm currently deciding how I want to entertain you next week. I'm always planning a killer show.
A few of you are probably wondering why I closed out with Bluebell. The thing is, I like her sound as an independent artist and I feel like she's an artist you oughta know! I hope she does some accoustic stuff in the future. She also made a splash with Lady and The Lost Boys, so I'm hoping to find some of that too. As a DJ, I'm always tuned in to different sounds around me. I guess it's the college DJ in me. I'm a Boomer at heart, but I hope that my musical flights of fancy don't scare you off...

Anyway, here's all the Turtley goodness you heard on Sunday!
